CES: Urge vs. iTunes Music Store is like Justin Timberlake vs U2
In Bill Gates’ keynote at CES last night, he announced a partnership with MTV Networks to create a music and media download service called “Urge.” I think this is supposed to be Microsoft’s iTunes Music Store Killer. As Om Malik put in his blog, this is “…Bill versus Steve, Microsoft (add partner name here) versus Apple, windows media versus iTunes…”
I think a great metaphor for this competition in online music sales is like Justin Timberlake vs U2. Justin Timberlake was at CES to help with the announcement of Urge and U2 has a strong relationship with Apple and their music-related product offering. Justin Timberlake had his day in the sun but it ended. He known wishes he could be great but his career for the most part is over. U2 has been a solid rock from the beginning.
